Title: A Tail of Survival
Medium: Pyrography on Red Gum Wood
The works explore the imagery and recent plight of the Wedge tailed eagles, intending to celebrate the beauty of nature and its ability to endure, whilst also reminding viewers of its fragility and humanities destructive impact on it. Made from a mixture of salvaged red gum wood sleepers and off cuts intended to be used as fire wood. Through cutting, sanding and burning, the once seemingly grey and weathered wood has been given new purpose and life, revealing the earthy red colour beneath the surface, reflecting the colour and aridity of the rural Australian landscape. The use of Pyrography results in a permanence that isn’t achieved through other mediums of drawing such as graphite, the image being physically burned into the wood, emphasizing the notion of Australia’s harsh dry landscape.
